Why it matters: More Americans can now care for loved ones or themselves without financial hardship, fostering healthier families and a more supportive society.

Get this: a record one-third of all American workers can now take paid time off if they need to care for a new baby or handle a serious illness. That's the biggest share ever.

For a long time, the U.S. has been one of the only big countries without a national paid leave law. That meant a lot of people had to choose between their paycheck and their family or health. Unpaid leave only became a thing about 30 years ago.

States Stepping Up

But things are changing fast. States have been leading the charge, passing 14 paid leave laws since 2002. Ten of those happened in just the last decade, and three more are kicking in this year. These state-level laws now cover a huge chunk of the U.S. population.

Some of these state programs are seriously clever, offering extra help where it's needed most. Colorado, for instance, gives new parents with babies in intensive care an extra 12 weeks. Oregon steps up for survivors of domestic violence. And Connecticut even offers paid leave for organ or bone marrow donors. That's pretty nuts.

In total, these 14 laws cover 32% of private-sector workers — about 46 million people. So, roughly one in three women, men, and parents in the private sector are now eligible. That's a huge shift.

Certain groups have seen even bigger gains. Over half of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander workers now have state paid leave. And 41% of Latinx workers qualify. This is because these communities often live in states that have passed these programs.

Currently, 13 states and Washington D.C. have active paid leave laws, including big ones like California, New Jersey, New York, and Oregon.

Why This Matters

Historically, workers of color, especially women of color, were less likely to get paid leave from their employers. These new state laws are starting to balance that out. Everyone will need time off at some point, but those with fewer financial resources often face bigger health challenges and can't afford unpaid time off. This is especially true for low-wage workers, two-thirds of whom are women and often handle most of the family caregiving.

And there's more good news on the horizon. Six other states, including Hawaii, Illinois, and Virginia, are looking at their own paid leave programs. If they pass, that could push the total coverage to 44% of American workers. Virginia is actually super close to getting new legislation signed into law.

Even at the federal level, there's been some talk across the aisle. While a national plan isn't here yet, the fact that both sides are even discussing it is a pretty big deal. It means more people might soon get the time they need without losing their paycheck. And that's something worth cheering about.
