The VZ-6617 is a new medium format camera. It lets photographers change frame sizes for their landscape shots. This makes it easier to experiment without buying multiple cameras.

Exposing Engineering designed the camera. They have over 20 years of experience in camera design. They used 3D printing to keep the VZ-6617 affordable and easy to upgrade.

Flexible Frame Sizes

Traditional medium format cameras lock you into one frame size. This limits creativity. The VZ-6617 changes this.

It uses a 3D-printed masking guide called the Variable Zone Film Gate. This lets photographers switch frame sizes within the same camera body. They can even change sizes in the middle of a roll of 120mm film.

Other cameras have frame masks, but they are often limited. You usually have to choose the size before or after exposing the film. The VZ-6617's masking guide is built into the camera. This means you can change frame sizes smoothly mid-roll. You don't need to remove film backs or install separate plates.

The VZ-6617 also has a lens cone. This part is made from 3D-printed plastic and steel. It has a magnetic seal. This design lets users swap lenses mid-roll, in addition to changing frame sizes.

Design and Repairability

Exposing Engineering designed the VZ-6617 for easy repair and adaptation. It uses a modular assembly. This means you only need one screwdriver to access fasteners. The company plans to offer spare parts and video guides for repairs.

The camera body weighs about 2 pounds. With a Fujinon-SW 90mm f/8 lens, it weighs about 4 pounds. It includes a machined brass focusing helicoid with a printed scale for zone focusing. Multiple bubble levels help keep compositions aligned.

The camera has several cold shoes for accessories. These include optical viewfinders, phone mounts, laser rangefinders, and light meters. A magnetic cable release docks to the camera grip for comfort and long exposures. The back is fully removable for modular accessories, like a ground glass attachment. Each lens cone has a protective cage to prevent damage.

The VZ-6617 is currently on Kickstarter. A pledge of $549 gets a fully assembled camera body and lens cone. It's compatible with 90mm lenses from brands like Schneider Kreuznach, Nikon, Nikkor-SW, or Rodenstock. Delivery is expected in August.
