For nearly two decades, conservationists have operated with a nagging problem: they weren't sure their work was actually working. In 2006, economists Paul Ferraro and Subhrendu Pattanayak published a warning that would reshape how the field thinks about impact. Conservation had plenty of effort, they argued, but lacked the causal evidence to know which efforts actually stopped biodiversity loss and which were just well-meaning money sinks.
The problem became concrete in 2008 when Ferraro's team studied protected areas — the conservation world's flagship intervention. They found something uncomfortable: earlier research had dramatically overstated how well protected areas prevented deforestation. The reason was almost embarrassingly simple. Protected areas tend to be created in remote places, far from roads and towns, where deforestation is already unlikely to happen. So when researchers saw forests thriving inside protected boundaries while surrounding forests fell, they assumed the protection caused the difference. But the forests were thriving partly because of where they were, not just because they were protected.
This is the seduction of correlation. It's easy to observe that two things happen together — protected forests stay standing, surrounding forests disappear — and conclude one caused the other. Harder to prove. And when conservation budgets are finite and biodiversity is collapsing, the difference between "probably works" and "we know it works" isn't academic. It's the difference between resources flowing to interventions that actually reverse decline and resources flowing to interventions that feel productive.

The conservation community is shifting. Rigorous methods — randomized controlled trials, natural experiments, statistical techniques that isolate one intervention's effect from the noise of everything else happening — are moving from rare to expected. Payment for ecosystem services programs, community forest management, habitat restoration: these are increasingly evaluated with the same rigor medical researchers use for drug trials.
It's a higher bar to clear. It costs more. It takes longer. Some conservationists initially resisted, arguing the field couldn't afford such demands. But the alternative — funding approaches without knowing if they work — has proven far more expensive. Ineffective programs waste time and money while biodiversity continues its decline.
The shift is also practical. Donors are now requiring causal evidence before funding. Researchers are embedding evaluation into program design from the beginning, not bolting it on afterward. Practitioners and scientists are collaborating rather than working in parallel.
This matters because conservation's next decade will be defined by doing more with less. Climate change, habitat loss, and funding constraints mean the field can't afford to keep supporting approaches that feel good but don't deliver. Proof of impact isn't bureaucratic overhead — it's the foundation for directing limited resources toward what actually reverses the trends we're watching accelerate.
