For those not glued to the 24/7 nest cam, Jackie and her partner Shadow are the avian stars of Big Bear Lake, their domestic bliss (and occasional drama) streamed live for millions. So, when Jackie hadn't been seen on camera for days, and a phone video emerged of an adult eagle near Dana Point Park defending itself with talons but unable to fly, well, the internet held its breath.
LA County Parks San Dimas Raptor Rescue swooped in (pun intended) to pick up the grounded bird, which is now receiving top-tier care. Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), the group behind the livestream, is in close contact. The catch? Jackie isn't banded, and Big Bear Lake is a popular spot for eagles, making definitive ID tricky. But the timing? Suspiciously perfect.

Jackie and Shadow's life in the San Bernardino National Forest is rarely dull. This past nesting season alone saw ravens destroy two eggs in January, only for the pair to lay two more that successfully hatched. Chicks Sandy and Luna arrived in April, captivating their digital audience from their massive nest.
Eagle life is tough. Eaglets spend 10 to 14 weeks in the nest, dodging hawks, ravens, and owls, not to mention brutal weather. Remember 2025, when a snowstorm took one of their three chicks? It was a real-time tragedy for the viewers. Only about 70% of eaglets even survive after they fledge, with cars proving a particular menace to young, road-foraging birds.
Jackie and Shadow first paired up in 2018, raising chicks in 2019 and 2022. Their 2023 and 2024 seasons were egg-less, which isn't unusual – only half of all eagle eggs typically hatch. But when they do, these birds are prolific. Their 2025 season with Sunny and Gizmo (the survivors of that infamous snowstorm) was another testament to their resilience.
Young eagles, once their wings are strong enough, can fledge anywhere from 10 to 14 weeks. And they travel, oh, do they travel. Fledglings from Southern California have been spotted as far north as British Columbia and south into Baja California. Since FOBBV doesn't tag their eagles, their post-nest adventures remain a mystery, adding to the intrigue.
