Engineers have long looked for new ways to design computer mice. They have created pen-shaped, flat, and even ring-shaped versions. Now, a UK company called NextAxis Design has introduced an egg-shaped mouse called Ovo. It is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.
The Ovo mouse weighs 98 grams (3.5 oz) and measures 48 x 61 mm (1.9 x 2.4 in). It is made to fit comfortably in your palm. The company says it allows for more natural hand movement and positioning. You can use it in the air or on a mouse pad. In both cases, it aims to reduce wrist strain. However, this new design might take some time to get used to.
How the Ovo Mouse Works
Unlike a regular mouse, Ovo does not need a surface to slide on. Instead, it understands how your hand moves and is positioned in 3D space. You move the cursor by rotating and tilting the device, not by dragging it across a desk. Ovo also has standard features like clicking and scrolling.

One key feature is customization. Users can change sensitivity, set up personal shortcuts and gestures, and create profiles for different tasks. The mouse has a two-part shell. Different actions can be assigned to each part. The top can control tapping and the cursor, while the bottom can be used for swiping or scrolling.
The Ovo mouse is designed to have a stable and precise cursor. This makes it useful for 3D work, presentations, and design software. For example, video editors might find it easier to navigate timelines by continuously rotating the mouse instead of using drag-and-drop.

While Ovo has all the functions of a traditional mouse, its creators say it might not replace a regular mouse for all tasks. It is mainly a pointing device. For some very precise jobs, you might still prefer your old mouse.
Ovo has a rechargeable battery that lasts up to 80 hours per charge. It can be charged wirelessly or with a USB-C cable. It comes in black, white, and orange with a glossy finish.
On Kickstarter, the early backing price for Ovo is $109. The planned retail price is $199. This includes the Ovo device, a USB-C cable, and a charging pad. If the campaign succeeds, shipping is expected to start in December.
