Von Hagens was born in 1945 in what is now western Poland. He started medical school in East Germany. In 1970, he moved to West Germany to continue his studies. How Plastination Works

The plastination process begins with fixation. Formaldehyde is pumped through the body's arteries to remove bacteria. Next, the body is dissected, removing skin, fat, and connective tissues. It then soaks in an acetone bath to remove water and soluble fats. As von Hagens explained, "Without water, no decay."

The body is then placed in a bath of liquid polymer, such as silicone rubber, polyester, or epoxy resin. A vacuum is created, causing the acetone to vaporize. This allows the polymer to fill all the tiny gaps. Finally, the body is cured. The entire process takes about 1,500 hours to complete.

Public Reception and Legacy

The first "BODY WORLDS" exhibition opened in Tokyo in 1995. It featured posed plastinated bodies. The exhibition then toured globally, drawing both crowds and criticism. Some compared von Hagens’ work to Nazi crimes, while others said he "plays with the corpses like a child plays with dolls."

Von Hagens defended his work, stating that anatomists must challenge taboos about death. He noted that the body is deeply personal to us.

Despite the controversy, the exhibition has been very popular. Organizers report that over 58 million people have seen it in 42 countries. Permanent installations exist in California, Germany, and the Netherlands.
