Beyond the Beakers: Jobs and Billions
Beyond the mind-bending science, the QSL is expected to pump some serious energy into Massachusetts' economy. We're talking new job opportunities in research and startups. The construction phase alone is projected to create over 150 full-time jobs, with another 75 to 100 jobs popping up in the supply chain and professional services across the Commonwealth.
MIT startups are already an economic powerhouse, having generated a staggering $1.9 trillion in annual global revenues back in 2014. The QSL will provide the essential, highly specialized equipment these quantum startups need, further solidifying the region's innovation economy.
Ian Waitz, MIT’s vice president for research, explains that this new facility will allow for larger experiments and expand into fields like biology and chemistry, which have massive innovative potential. It will also house the MIT Quantum Initiative (QMIT), serving as both an on-campus incubator and a regional quantum hub. Prepare for some very smart people to get even smarter.
One floor of the facility will focus on developing radio-frequency (RF) electronics for controlling quantum systems, helping researchers create custom quantum experiments and protect that fragile quantum data in real-world applications. Because even quantum data needs a good bodyguard.
This isn't MIT's first rodeo. A decade ago, they made a similar investment in nanotechnology with MIT.nano, which now serves hundreds of users from outside MIT and even spun out companies founded by non-MIT individuals. The QSL aims for similar success, even collaborating with MIT Lincoln Laboratory’s SQUILL Foundry, which offers free quantum fabrication services to researchers.
