Plus, it's got a coronagraph, a fancy gadget that blocks out the blinding light from nearby stars. This lets scientists actually see the planets orbiting them, promising to image "giant worlds that are older, colder, and in closer orbits" than we've ever directly observed. Chasing the Universe's Wildest Mystery
Here's the big one: The universe is expanding, but at a rate far faster than anyone expected. It's like throwing a ball in the air, as senior project scientist Julie McEnery puts it, and watching it just keep going up. Scientists have known about this cosmic anomaly since the late last century, but they still don't have a good explanation. Enter Roman.
This telescope was purpose-built to gather the data needed to crack this enigma, diving into dark matter, dark energy, black holes, and the formation of billions of galaxies. Its initial mission is five years, with a potential extension to ten. Plenty of time to figure out why the universe is acting so weird.
Named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA's first chief of astronomy, the telescope's journey to orbit was a nail-biter. Despite the White House's attempts to slash NASA's science budget (a proposed 46% cut for 2027, which The Planetary Society warns could end over 50 missions), Congress stepped in to save Roman, restoring $24.4 billion for 2026. For now, it's safe.
"It feels like I'm on the edge of a precipice, and we're just about to set a foot off into the unknown," McEnery said at the post-launch press conference. Which, if you think about it, is a pretty good description of all science. And for a telescope that nearly didn't make it, that unknown just got a whole lot more interesting.
Oh, and if you're keeping track, this was also the last flight of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket. It's retiring to make way for the Starship project. Because even rockets need to know when to gracefully exit the stage.
